12 large Eggs, beaten 1 cup Milk or Half & Half or a combination Salt to taste Bread, Cinnamon, French or Regular 1/2 cup Butter * 1/2 cup Maple Syrup * 1/2 cup Brown Sugar * * These proportions are not critical, so use as much as you like. Instructions Melt the butter, syrup and brown sugar in a skillet. Pour into a casserole dish about 9" x 13", but with higher sides than a layer cake pan. Place a couple layers of bread over the melted mixture. Pour the beaten eggs, milk, and salt over the bread. There should be excess liquid around the bread. Soak overnight in the refrigerator (the liquid will be absorbed). Bake at around 350 F, although the temperature can be higher if you are in a hurry. Depending on how deep the bread is, it takes around 50 minutes to cook. Sometimes it puffs up, so it's great to serve immediately if you can. If not it's good, just not spectacular. Serve with additional butter and syrup. You can vary this by putting cream cheese and/or jam and/or fresh peaches and berries between the layers of bread. |
